William Eastin English (born November 3, 1850 in Lexington , Scott County , Indiana , †  April 29, 1926 in Indianapolis , Indiana) was an American politician . In 1884 and 1885 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Life

William English was the son of Congressman William Hayden English (1822-1896), who sat between 1853 and 1861 also for the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives and in 1880 was a Democratic candidate for the vice presidency . The younger English attended public and private schools. Since 1865 he lived in Indianapolis. After a subsequent law degree at the later Butler University and his admission as a lawyer in 1873, he began to work in Indianapolis in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1880 he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives.

In the congressional elections of 1882, English was defeated by incumbent Stanton J. Peelle of the Republican Party . But he appealed against the election result. After this was granted on May 22, 1884, he was able to take up his mandate in Congress on that day . Since he renounced another candidacy in the regular elections of 1884 , he could only end the current legislative period until March 3, 1885.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, English resumed his legal practice. In 1892 and 1896 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions . During the Spanish-American War of 1898 , English was a captain on General Joseph Wheeler's staff . In 1900 he switched to the Republican Party - because of their stricter position on the question of protective tariffs. In June 1916 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where Charles Evans Hughes was nominated as a presidential candidate. William English was a member of the Indiana Senate from 1916 until his death . He died on April 29, 1926 in Indianapolis, where he was also buried.
