Elias S. Holliday

Elias Selah Holliday (born March 5, 1842 in Aurora , Dearborn County , Indiana , †  March 13, 1936 in Brazil , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1909 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elias Holliday grew up on various farms in Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa . He attended schools in his homeland and later taught in Iowa for some time. During the Civil War , Holliday served in the Union Army until August 1864 . After the war, he continued his own education at Hartsville College in Indiana. He also worked as a teacher again. After studying law at Mount Vernon and being admitted to the bar in 1873, he began practicing this profession in Carbon . Since 1874 Holliday lived in Brazil, a place in Clay County . Between 1877 and 1880 and again in 1887 and 1888 he was mayor of this small town. In 1884 he also acted as their legal representative; from 1892 to 1896 he was a member of the local council.

Politically, Holliday was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1900 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded George W. Faris on March 4, 1901 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1909 . In 1908 Holliday declined to run again for Congress. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he returned to practice as a lawyer in Brazil. In 1922 he retired. He died on March 13, 1936 at the age of 94.
