James T. Johnston

James Thomas Johnston (born January 19, 1839 in Greencastle , Indiana , †  July 19, 1904 in Rockville , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1889 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Johnston attended public schools in his home country. During the civil war between 1862 and 1865 he served in various units in the Union Army , where he made it to lieutenant. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1866, he began working in this profession in Rockville. Between 1866 and 1868 he also worked as a public prosecutor.

Politically, Johnston was a member of the Republican Party . In 1868 he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives; between 1874 and 1878 he was a member of the State Senate . In the congressional election of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded John Edward Lamb on March 4, 1885 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1889 . In 1888 he was defeated by the Democrat Elijah V. Brookshire .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, James Johnston practiced law again. In 1893 he was head of the Indiana section of the Grand Army of the Republic Veterans Association . He died on July 19, 1904 in Rockville, where he was also buried.
