George W. Faris

George Washington Faris (born June 9, 1854 in Rensselaer , Jasper County , Indiana , †  April 17, 1914 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1901 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Faris attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1877 at Asbury University in Greencastle , from which later DePauw University emerged . After studying law and his admission as a lawyer in 1877, he began to work in Indianapolis in this profession. In 1880 he moved his residence and his office to Terre Haute . There he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1884 he unsuccessfully applied for a position as a district judge.

In the congressional election of 1894 Faris was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the eighth constituency of Indiana, where he succeeded Elijah V. Brookshire on March 4, 1895 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1901 . Since 1897 he represented there as the successor to Jesse Overstreet the fifth district of his state. During his time as Congressman, the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell .

In 1900 George Faris renounced another congressional candidacy. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he practiced again as a lawyer in Terre Haute. But he soon moved to the federal capital Washington, where he continued his legal practice. He died there on April 17, 1914. He was buried in Terre Haute.
