Gilbert de la Matyr

Gilbert De La Matyr (born July 8, 1825 in Pharsalia , Chenango County , New York , †  May 17, 1892 in Akron , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After a good primary education, Gilbert De La Matyr was trained as a clergyman by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1854. In this church he rose to the leadership level. For one term he was its head. During the Civil War he was involved in the establishment of an artillery regiment from New York. In this unit he served as a military chaplain for three years. After the war he worked as a clergyman in various larger cities. In this way he came to Indianapolis , capital of the state of Indiana.

Politically, De La Matyr joined the short-lived Greenback Party . In the congressional election of 1878 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Republican John Hanna on March 4, 1879 . Since he refused to run again in 1880, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1881 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, De La Matyr moved to Denver , Colorado in 1881 , where he continued his spiritual activities. From 1889 he also worked as a clergyman in Akron. He died there on May 17, 1892.
