Floyd James Fithian (born November 3, 1928 in Vesta , Johnson County , Nebraska , †  June 27, 2003 in Annandale , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1975 and 1983 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Floyd Fithian attended Vesta High School until 1947 and then Peru State College , also in Nebraska, until 1951 . Between 1951 and 1955 he served in the US Navy . During this time the Korean War fell . Fithian remained a member of the Naval Reserve until 1971. After his military service, he continued his education until 1964 with a study at the University of Nebraska . He then worked as a teacher and in agriculture.

Politically, Fithian was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1972 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In the 1974 congressional election , however, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Republican Earl F. Landgrebe on January 3, 1975 , whose support for President Richard Nixon during the Watergate affair badly damaged him during the election campaign. After three re-elections, Fithian was able to complete four terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 .

In 1982, Fithian decided not to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he ran for the US Senate , but he was defeated by the Republican incumbent Richard Lugar with 46:54 percent of the vote. He later became a member of the staff of US Senator Paul Simon from Illinois . Floyd Fithian died on June 27, 2003 in Annandale and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
