William Prince (politician)

William Prince (* 1772 in Ireland ; †  September 8, 1824 at Princeton , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1823 and 1824 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The exact date and place of birth of William Prince are not known. He grew up in Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1796, where he settled in what would later become the state of Indiana. In his new homeland he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson and took part as a captain in the Battle of Tippecanoe . In 1816 he was a delegate to the Indiana Constituent Assembly. In the same year he was elected to the Indiana Senate. Between 1821 and 1822 he was a member of the House of Representatives of that state.

In the congressional election of 1822 , Prince was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Jonathan Jennings on March 4, 1823 . He was able to exercise this mandate in Congress until his death on September 8, 1824 near the city of Princeton named after him.
