Abraham J. Hostetler

Abraham Jonathan Hostetler (born November 22, 1818 in Washington County , Indiana , †  November 24, 1899 in Bedford , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Abraham Hostetler attended the public schools in his home country and then completed an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. Later he also worked in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the Indiana Senate between 1854 and 1858 .

In the congressional elections of 1878 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Morton C. Hunter on March 4, 1879 . Since he was not confirmed in 1880, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1881 . In June 1880 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Cincinnati , on which Winfield Scott Hancock was nominated as a presidential candidate.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Abraham Hostetler worked in commerce. He died near Bedford on November 24, 1899.
