James M. Gregg (1859)

James Madison Gregg (born June 26, 1806 in Patrick County , Virginia , †  June 16, 1869 in Danville , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Gregg attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1830, he began to work in Danville in this profession. Between 1834 and 1837 he was head of land surveying in Hendricks County ; from 1837 to 1845 he served as a clerk at the local district court.

Politically, Gregg joined the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1856 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Lucien Barbour on March 4, 1857 . Since he was not re-elected in 1858, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was determined by the events leading up to the civil war .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, James Gregg practiced as a lawyer in Danville. In 1862 he was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives . He died in Danville on June 16, 1869.
