D. Bailey Merrill, 1953

D. Bailey Merrill (born November 22, 1912 in Hymera , Sullivan County , Indiana , †  October 14, 1993 in Evansville , Indiana) was an American politician . Between 1953 and 1955 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bailey Merrill attended the Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute until 1933 . After that he worked as a teacher. After a subsequent law degree at Indiana University in Bloomington and his admission to the bar in 1937, he began to practice in this profession. During World War II , Merrill served in the US Army between 1942 and 1946 .

Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1952 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Democrat Winfield K. Denton on January 3, 1953 . Since he lost to Denton in 1954 and 1956, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1955 . After his second defeat, Bailey Merrill retired from politics. He died on October 14, 1993 in Evansville, where he was also buried.
