Augustus N. Martin

Augustus Newton Martin (born March 23, 1847 in Whitestown , Butler County , Pennsylvania , †  July 11, 1901 in Marion , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1895 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Augustus Martin attended public schools in his home country including the Witherspoon Institute in Butler . Between 1863 and 1865 he served in the Union Army during the Civil War . After the war, he continued his education by studying at Eastman College in Poughkeepsie , New York State . After that he worked as a teacher for some time.

After studying law in Bluffton (Indiana) and being admitted to the bar in 1870, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1875 he was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives . He then was an administrative clerk at the Supreme Court of Indiana between 1876 and 1880 . Between 1881 and 1883 he lived in Austin ( Texas ), before returning to Bluffton.

In the congressional election of 1888 , Martin was elected to the eleventh constituency of Indiana in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded George Washington Steele on March 4, 1889 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . In 1894 he was defeated by his predecessor Steele. After leaving the US House of Representatives, Augustus Martin practiced as a lawyer again. He died on July 11, 1901 in a soldiers' home in Marion.
