Thomas Neel Stilwell (born August 29, 1830 in Stilwell , Ohio , †  January 14, 1874 in Anderson , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1867 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After primary school, Thomas Stilwell attended Oxford College and Hill College . After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1852, he began to work in this new profession in Anderson (Indiana). At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1856 he was a candidate of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives from Indiana selected. Stilwell served as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War .

In the congressional elections of 1864 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded James F. McDowell on March 4, 1865 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1866, he could only complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1867 . After the end of the Civil War, this was overshadowed by the tensions between Stilwell's party and the new President Andrew Johnson .

In 1867 and 1868, Thomas Stilwell succeeded James Wilson as the US ambassador to Venezuela . He then became president of the First National Bank of Anderson . He died on January 14, 1874 in Anderson as a result of a gunshot wound. The sources do not provide any information about how this injury came about.
