Jeptha Dudley New (born November 28, 1830 in Vernon , Jennings County , Indiana , † July 9, 1892 ibid) was an American politician .

New studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1851 and then practiced in Vernon until 1864. From 1852 to 1854 he was mayor of the city and from 1860 to 1864 prosecutor of Jennings County. From 1864 to 1869 New served as a judge and then began to practice again in Vernon.

New was elected as a Democrat in the 44th  Congress , where he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Indiana from March 4, 1875 to March 3, 1877 in the US House of Representatives . However, he refused to run again in the 1876 elections. It was not until two years later that he stood for election again and from March 4, 1879 to March 3, 1881 he was again a member of the US House of Representatives. After retiring from politics, New was a judge in the Indiana Sixth District Judge from 1882 to 1888. In 1892 the Democratic Party nominated him as a candidate for a judge's post on the Supreme Court of Indiana . However, New died before the election. He was buried in Vernon Cemetery .
