Elwood Haynes Hillis (born March 6, 1926 in Kokomo , Indiana ) is a former American politician . Between 1971 and 1987 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elwood Hillis attended the public schools of his home country and then graduated from the Culver Military Academy until 1944 . He then took part in the final phase of World War II between 1944 and 1946 as a first lieutenant . He was used on the European theater of war. Until 1954 he was a captain reservist in the US Army . After studying law at Indiana University and being admitted to the bar in 1952, he began working in this profession in Kokomo.

Politically, Hillis joined the Republican Party . He was then elected to the Indiana House of Representatives twice . Between 1962 and 1970 he was a delegate to regional Republican party conventions in Indiana. In the 1970 congressional election , Hillis was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Richard L. Roudebush on January 3, 1971 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1987 . During this time the Vietnam War ended . In 1974, the work of Congress was also overshadowed by the Watergate affair .

In 1986 Elwood Hillis renounced another candidacy. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he returned to practice as a lawyer.
