Adam Benjamin Jr. (born August 6, 1935 in Gary , Indiana , †  September 7, 1982 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1982 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Adam Benjamin attended the common schools and then to 1952 the Kemper Military High School in Boonville ( Missouri ). Between 1952 and 1954 he was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps . He then graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point until 1958 . He remained a member of the US Army until 1961 , most recently as a first lieutenant . That year he worked as a teacher at Edison High School in Gary; In 1962 he was employed as a computer analyst in Chicago . From 1964 and 1965 he was employed by the Gary City Administration in the land use area. Until 1967 he also served as Executive Secretary to the Mayor in this city. After studying law at Valparaiso Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1966, he began working in this profession in his native Gary.

Politically, Benjamin was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1967 to 1971 he was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives ; between 1971 and 1976 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 1976 congressional election , Benjamin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Ray J. Madden on January 3, 1977 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his sudden death on September 7, 1982 . His mandate fell to Katie Hall after a special election .
