Katie Hall
Katie Beatrice Hall (born April 3, 1938 in Mound Bayou , Bolivar County , Mississippi , † February 20, 2012 in Gary , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1982 and 1985 she represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Katie Beatrice Green, so her maiden name, attended the public schools in her home country and then studied at Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena until 1960 . She then continued her education by studying at Indiana University in Bloomington . After that she worked as a teacher. Politically, Hall became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1974 and 1976 she was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives ; from 1976 to 1982 she was a member of the State Senate . In 1978 she was Delegates at a special congress of the Democrats in Memphis ( Tennessee ).
In 1980 Katie Hall was President of the Indiana Regional Democratic Party Convention. After the death of Congressman Adam Benjamin , she was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she took up her new mandate on November 2, 1982 when the by-election was due for the first seat of her state . After a re-election, she could remain in Congress until January 3, 1985 . She was instrumental in introducing the birthday of Martin Luther King as a federal holiday . In 1984 she was no longer nominated for re-election by her party.
After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Hall initially served as vice chair of the Gary City Housing Committee. From 1985 to 1993 she was an administrative clerk in this city. In 1988 and 1990, she ran unsuccessfully in her party's congressional primaries. In 2002 she returned to the Gary City Council. In that year she also came into conflict with the law: She was charged with criminal offenses - including extortion - and sentenced to probation with house arrest after a confession. Her daughter, who was also accused, was sentenced to 16 months in prison. Katie Hall lived in Gary to the end.
