John H. O'Neall

John Henry O'Neall (born October 30, 1838 in Newberry , Newberry County , South Carolina , †  July 15, 1907 in Washington , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

At the age of eight, John O'Neall was an orphan after the death of his parents. In the years that followed, he was raised by his grandfather, who lived in Daviess County , Indiana. There he also attended the public schools. By 1862 O'Neall studied at Indiana University in Bloomington . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his admission as a lawyer in 1864, he began to work in Terre Haute in this profession. He later moved his practice to Washington. In 1873 and 1874 he was a prosecutor in the eleventh judicial district of his state.

Politically, O'Neall was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1866 he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives. In the congressional elections of 1886 O'Neall was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded Thomas R. Cobb on March 4, 1887 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1891 . In 1890 he renounced another candidacy.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, John O'Neall practiced law again. He was also the curator of schools in Washington City for 15 years. In 1896 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention , where William Jennings Bryan was first nominated as a presidential candidate. Between 1899 and 1907 he was also the legal representative for the City of Washington. In 1899 he founded the Federal Trust Co., of which he was president until it was converted into a state bank in 1902. John O'Neall died on July 15, 1907 in Washington, where he was also buried.
