William Graham (politician, 1782)

William Graham (born March 16, 1782 on the high seas, †  August 17, 1858 in Vallonia , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Graham was born on the high seas. He settled with his parents in Mercer County , Kentucky , where he attended public schools. In 1811 he moved to Vallonia, Indiana , where he worked in agriculture. At the same time he became politically active. In 1812 he was elected to the Territorial House of Representatives; In 1816 he was a delegate to the constituent assembly of the future Indiana state. Graham was a member and president of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1816 to 1821 . He was then a member of the State Senate from 1821 to 1833 .

Politically, Graham joined the Whig Party in the mid-1830s . In the congressional election of 1836 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded John Carr on March 4, 1837 . Since he lost to Carr in 1838, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1839 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, William Graham returned to farming. He died on August 17, 1858 near Vallonia, where he was also buried.
