David Kilgore (1859)

David Kilgore (born April 3, 1804 in Harrison County , Kentucky , †  January 22, 1879 in Yorktown , Indiana ) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1861 he represented the state of Indiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1819, David Kilgore and his father came to Franklin County , Indiana, where he attended public schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1830, he began to work in Yorktown in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1833 and 1839 he was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives , to which he was re-elected in 1855. That year he served as president of this chamber. From 1839 to 1846 Kilgore was the presiding judge in the Yorktown District Court. In 1850 he took part as a delegate to a meeting to revise the Indiana Constitution. In the 1850s he became a member of the Republican Party founded in 1854 .

In the congressional election of 1856 Kilgore was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Indiana , where he succeeded David P. Holloway on March 4, 1857 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1861 . These were determined by the events in the immediate run-up to the civil war . In 1866 he was a delegate to the National Union Convention in Philadelphia . David Kilgore died on January 22, 1879 near Yorktown. He was also buried in this city.
