Harrison County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Cynthiana , named after the daughters Cynthia and Anna of Robert Harrison , the founder of the land on which the city was built.

The county is located in northeast Kentucky, about 30 km to the north from Ohio , to the northwest about 65 km from Indiana , and covers an area of ​​803 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Pendleton County , Bracken County , Robertson County , Nicholas County , Bourbon County , Scott County, and Grant Counties .

Benjamin Harrison

Harrison County was formed on December 21, 1793 from parts of Bourbon County and Scott County. It was named after Colonel Benjamin Harrison , an early settler in the area. On June 11 and 12, 1864, a battle between the Northern and Southern states took place near Kellar Bridge as part of the Civil War . On the Union side, these were the 168th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the 171st Ohio National Guard and the Kentucky Harrison County Home Guards who fought against Morgan's Confederate Division. The battle ended in a Union victory, with over 1,000 men killed on both sides.

A total of 25 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 4, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , Harrison County had 17,983 people in 7,012 households and 5,062 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.65 percent white, 2.52 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.63 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.77 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.5 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,210 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,065. Males had a median income of $ 31,045 versus $ 23,268 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,478. 9.4 percent of families and 12.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 15.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
