Lee County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Beattyville , named after Samuel Beatty , an early settler in the area. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in east central Kentucky and has an area of ​​547 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Powell County , Wolfe County , Breathitt County , Owsley County , Jackson County, and Estill Counties .

history

Lee County was formed on January 29, 1870 as the 115th County in Kentucky from parts of Breathitt County, Estill County, Owsley County and Wolfe County. It was named after Robert Edward Lee , the commanding general of the Confederate in the American Civil War, or after Lee County in Virginia . The first district capital was Proctor until 1872. After that, Taylor's Landing was renamed Beattyville and became the new county seat.

A total of nine buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 9, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Lee County had 7,916 people in 2,985 households and 2,122 families. The population density was 15 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 95.10 percent white, 3.79 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.37 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 18,544 , and the median income for a family is $ 24,918. Males had a median income of $ 25,930 versus $ 19,038 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,325. 25.2 percent of families and 30.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
