Lawrence County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Louisa . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northeast Kentucky, on the border with West Virginia and has an area of ​​1,088 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Carter County , Boyd County , Martin County , Johnson County , Morgan County, and Elliott Counties .

history

Lawrence County was formed on December 14, 1821 from parts of Floyd County and Greenup County. It was named after Captain James Lawrence , who became famous with the saying: "Don't give up the ship" in the British-American War of 1812 after he was fatally wounded.

A total of ten buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 9, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Lawrence County had 15,569 people in 5,954 households and 4,477 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer.
