Wolfe County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Campton .

The county is located in east central Kentucky and covers an area of 577 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Menifee County , Morgan County , Magoffin County , Breathitt County , Lee County, and Powell Counties .
history
Wolfe County was formed on March 5, 1860 from parts of Breathitt County, Morgan County, Owsley County and Powell County. It was named after Nathaniel Wolfe , a member of the legislative assembly.
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of October 23, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Wolfe County had 7,065 people in 2,816 households and 1,976 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.24 percent white, 0.24 percent African American, 0.08 percent Native American, 0.03 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.33 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.51 percent of the population.
Of the 2,816 households, 33.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers, 29.8 percent were non-families, 27.0 percent were single households and 9.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 women 18 years of age or older, there were statistically 96.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 19,310 , and the median income for a family is $ 23,333. Males had a median income of $ 23,859 versus $ 18,952 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,321. 29.9 percent of families and 35.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 50.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 26.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
