Zachariah is an American film released in 1971 . The film is a mixture of anti-western ( acid western ) and music film and describes itself as the “first electric western”.
The film includes appearances by the James Gang , Country Joe and the Fish , violinist Doug Kershaw and the drummer of the John Coltrane Quartet Elvin Jones . During their performances, the musicians play directly on the western locations of the film. Usually their concerts are in the foreground without them taking part in the actual action.
action
In the wild west: Zachariah receives a revolver in the mail, practices a little and then kills a man in the local saloon in a duel. He and his friend Matthew set off to become gunslingers, joining the Crackers, a rock band who are also (pitifully inept) stage bandits. Zachariah and Matthew quickly grow beyond the rock gang and continue to seek their fortune as gunslingers. Over time, their fame creates problems for them. They split up and become rivals. But in the end their love for each other wins out and they reconcile.
reception
Don Johnson compared his character to "the Govindas " in a 2014 interview with The AV Club
Roger Greenspun wrote that, in his experience from The New York Times , this was the first western to propagate homosexual love (alongside Andy Warhol's brilliant " Lonesome Cowboys " )
Financial failure
The film made a loss of $ 1,435,000.
