Richard Vincent "Dick" Van Patten (born December 9, 1928 in Kew Gardens , New York City - † June 23, 2015 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American actor , entrepreneur and animal rights activist .

Van Patten was also the co-founder of Natural Balance Pet Foods and the inspirer of National Guide Dog Month.

Life

Dick Van Patten was born in 1928 in Kew Gardens, New York, to Josephine Rose (née Acerno), who worked in advertising, and interior designer Richard Byron Van Patten. His mother was of Italian descent while his father had Dutch and English roots. Van Patten began working as a child as a model and actor; he made his Broadway debut at the age of seven . On the New York stages, he successfully appeared in a dozen plays before he reached his teenage age. He later moved to Hollywood and began a long career in film and television.

Through his leading role as journalist Tom Bradford - a father of eight - in all 112 episodes of the television series Eight Is Enough , he achieved great fame in the United States in the late 1970s. At the same time, he held various roles in six episodes of the television series Love Boat . In 1999 and 2000 he was one of the stars alongside Hugh O'Brian , Richard Roundtree , Deborah Winters and Richard Anderson in the miniseries Y2K - World in Crisis by Warren Chaney .

Dick Van Patten was the older brother of Joyce Van Patten and thus the uncle of the actress Talia Balsam . His younger half-brother is the television director Tim Van Patten .

In 1954, Van Patten married the professional Broadway dancer Patricia "Pat" Poole, whom he met on the Jackie Gleason Show . They lived together in Sherman Oaks , a district of the metropolis Los Angeles . Together they had three sons who all became actors: Vincent Van Patten, Nels Van Patten and Jimmy Van Patten. Vincent is married to actress Eileen Davidson , Nels to actress Nancy Valen .

Dick Van Patten died in June 2015 at the age of 86 of complications from diabetes in Santa Monica, California.

Honors

On November 20, 1985, Dick Van Patten was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . In 2008, he was honored with a Golden Palm on the Walk of Stars in Palm Springs , California .
