Danny O'Neil goes to Wertman High School , where he gets Mrs. Noble as the new class teacher. He immediately falls in love with her and is horrified to discover that she wants to marry the unpopular gymnastics teacher, Mr. Kelton. And after he cannot prevent this despite a few attempts, Danny realizes that he cannot be taken seriously as a child, which is why only his science-mad friend Lloyd can help him. Lloyd has built a machine with which he can grow fruits and vegetables to solve the world's hunger problems. And when that works, Danny takes advantage of it in himself to get older.
Since Danny continues to prevent Mrs. Noble's impending marriage, he makes his way to school and is promptly mistaken for the new director Harold Forndexter. So Danny takes on this identity and changes a lot about the school, not only to be popular with the students, to impress Mrs. Noble, but also to harass Mr. Kelton. His unusual methods and his optimistic, friendly and open-hearted manner also enable him to invite Mrs. Noble to dinner, which she also gratefully accepts. And despite some embarrassments that Danny just can't understand as a 14-year-old, both of them quickly find each other very personable and also get closer. This, in turn, annoys her fiancé, Mr. Kelton, who, in the greatest jealousy, risks becoming engaged to Mrs. Noble.
So Mr. Kelton searches the director's office and discovers in a file that Danny is not Mr. Forndexter and calls the police. Meanwhile, Mrs. Noble confesses to Danny that she has broken off their engagement, which is why Danny can now calmly transform back. However, he must first flee from the police, who alerted Mr. Kelton. So you flee to Lloyd's shed, where his machine is and Danny can transform himself back. However, this is observed by Mrs. Noble, who also lets herself be made younger in order to surprise Danny on the day as a new student at Wertman High School . Lloyd also used his machine, only he let himself age and is Danny's new class teacher.

A fateful invention was originally produced as a television two-part series by Disney for the American television station ABC . The first part ran under the Disney Sunday Movie program on March 6, 1988 and the second part on March 13, 1988. In Germany, it was released on VHS on November 22, 1988 in the same year and ran for the first time on January 30, 1994 RTL on television.
