John Arthur Rubinstein (* 8. December 1946 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American film and stage actor and composer of film music and film director .

Life

Early life

John Rubinstein was born the son of the Polish pianist Arthur Rubinstein and his wife Aniela Młynarska. His maternal grandfather was the Polish conductor Emil Młynarski . He was born with a passion for music and studied musicology and acting at the University of California, Los Angeles .

Career

In 1967, Rubinstein made his actor debut in an episode of the 1967 television series Dragnet . Three years later, in 1970, he composed his first soundtrack for the comedy film Paddy .

In October 1972 Rubinstein made his Broadway debut as the main actor in the musical Pippin and impressed in 1,944 performances by December 1977. Rubinstein's achievement was honored with a Theater World Award in 1973 . For his role in the drama forgotten God's children (Children of a Lesser God) , which could be seen from March 1980 to May 1982 887 times on Broadway, Rubinstein was awarded in 1980 both a Drama Desk Award and the coveted Tony Award . However, the comedy Getting Away With Murder , in which he appeared in March 1996, only got 17 performances. Rubinstein was involved in the original production of Fools , a comical fable by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Neil Simon , as both composer and lead actor.

Music composer for films

Rubinstein's career as a composer for films spanned 25 works in the period from 1970 to 1991. One of his most famous films is Bill McKay - The Candidate , directed by Michael Ritchie from 1972. In the same year he also composed the music for the western Jeremiah Johnson . After 1991 Rubinstein did not compose any more film music.

Film actor

After his debut in the television series Dragnet in 1967 , Rubinstein has appeared in front of the camera over 140 times. Rubinstein was mainly seen as a guest actor in television series, for example in Star Trek: Enterprise (2002/2004), 24 (2003) and Angel - Jäger der Darkis . He had one of his more famous feature films in 1978 in the thriller The Boys from Brazil . In Germany he was best known for the early evening series The Cases of Harry Fox (1984-1986), in which he played the lawyer Harrison Fox as the son of Jack Warden .

Private life

John Rubinstein has been married twice so far. In 1971 he married the actress Judi West , with whom he was married until 1989. From this marriage come a daughter and son Michael Weston . In 1992 Rubinstein married the actress Jane Lanier , with whom he has two sons. This relationship ended in 2002.
