Jack Warden (born September 18, 1920 as John Warden Lebzelter Jr. in Newark , New Jersey , † July 19, 2006 in New York City , New York ) was an American film actor . He was best known as an actor of edgy, but nevertheless compassionate characters.

life and career

In his youth he moved to live with his grandparents in Louisville , Kentucky . There he graduated from Du Pont Manuel High School. In the following years he boxed as a welterweight under the name "Johnny Costello", the maiden name of his mother. He won 13 fights in and around Louisville.

Warden served in the United States Navy from 1938 to 1941 . Then he joined the merchant navy , where he worked as a machinist. He left the Merchant Navy in 1942 and joined the Army, where he was a platoon sergeant and paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division . While in hospital for a leg injury, Warden read a play by Clifford Odets and then decided to become an actor.

Warden also appeared on Broadway in productions such as Golden Boy (1952), Lullaby (1954), A View from the Bridge (1955), A Very Special Baby (1956), The Body Beautiful (1958) and The Man in the Glass Booth ( 1968). From the mid-1950s he was initially seen in many small film roles. One of his most important he played in 1957 as the disinterested "Juror No. 7" in Sidney Lumet's debut feature film The Twelve Jurors . He became known to a larger audience through television appearances, so u. a. through the series The Bears Are Losing (1979–1980) and The Cases of Harry Fox (1984–1986). Warden's last film appearance was in 2000 in the film Heroes from the Second Series with Keanu Reeves .

Warden was married to the French actress Vanda Dupre from 1958. From this marriage his son Christopher emerged. In the early 1970s, the couple separated without getting a divorce. On July 19, 2006, Warden died of heart and kidney failure in a New York hospital . He left behind his partner, Marucha Hinds, his son Christopher and two grandchildren.
