The Bears are on the loose (Original title: The Bad News Bears ) is an American television series that was filmed in 1979 and 1980.

description

In 1979, a television series was created based on the 1976 film The Bears Are Losing . It ran in two seasons of 13 episodes each and is about the bears baseball team . The scripts were written by several authors; the series received its own story, which differed from the subject matter of the feature film, or the plot was expanded. Above all, more attention was paid to the everyday problems of children. The most important person in the series is, besides the trainer Morris Buttermaker, the headmistress Dr. Rappant.

action

Morris Buttermaker , a former baseball player with an intense lifestyle, is cheated out of three months' wages by his employer for his work as a pool cleaner. In a fit of anger and hurt pride, he sinks the car of his allegedly bankrupt bread donor into his swimming pool. As a result, Buttermaker is condemned to do a community service or go to prison. For Buttermaker, this is not the first time this has been at odds with the law. From now on, his job is to transform the Weever Bears into a reasonably powerful baseball team. The boys on this team come from a school for the difficult to educate, all of them children from broken backgrounds, with little prospect for their future. Buttermaker finds a messy pile and would like to avoid the task. However, Dr. Rappant, the headmistress of the school, successfully prevented it. Months pass before Buttermaker can bring the children closer to the sport. At the beginning there were some massive defeats - against the league leader, the Lions , even a 0:48 debacle - but the team gradually improved. Amanda, daughter of an ex-girlfriend of Buttermaker, joins the team and can strengthen it considerably, as does Kelly Leek. Finally, the first victories can be achieved. Above all, a real team is growing out of the once chaotic heap, which gives the boys self-confidence and gives them the feeling of not just being losers. Even Roy Turner, trainer of the lions, has to acknowledge this.

Location, music

The series was shot in Los Angeles , which is also the venue. "Los Toreadores" from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet was used as the title song .

characters

  • Morris Buttermaker - embodies a fateful man with a propensity for alcohol and horse racing. Working with the children opens up a new perspective for the former baseball player. Last but not least, he can restore the relationship with Amanda. Buttermaker is increasingly becoming an important caregiver for the children who respect and appreciate their trainer. In addition to his tireless work of teaching the team how to play baseball, he also becomes a contact and friend outside of the sports field.
  • Dr. Emily Rappant - is the head of the school. She does everything to make everyday life easier for the children who have it difficult enough. She is also very persistent in preventing Morris Buttermaker from running away from problems.
  • Amanda Wurlitzer - joins the team unexpectedly and is known to Buttermaker, who was in a relationship with her mother, as a talented pitcher . She's also confident enough to stand up to the rest of the team. She doesn't put up with anything and is determined to achieve her goals.
  • Mike Engelberg - the team's catcher is constantly struggling with figure problems. He is often exposed to imaginary or real insults because of his weight. He reacts to stress and problems by consuming large amounts of food.
  • Leslie Ogilvie - the team captain represents the “brain”, the intellectuals of the team. Mentally far ahead of his peers, Ogilvie diligently keeps statistics on every game. He takes on the tasks of the team manager and supports the coach as much as possible. As an athlete, however, he is rather untalented and likes to spend his time on the reserve bench during games. Ogilvie was transferred to the school for the difficult to educate for embezzlement.
  • Tanner Boyle - is considered a spirited hot spur who never avoids a fight and shows little respect for adults. As a batter (batsman) he also constantly messes with referees and tends to burst into anger if he doesn't succeed. He constantly invents new nicknames for his trainer Buttermaker, e.g. B. Buttercup, shortbread, butter cake.
  • Ahmad Abdul Rahim - is the casual outfielder with racial awareness. His position in center field suggests his athleticism. Ahmad belongs to the first generation of African Americans born with full civil rights and is in search of his place in society. He bears the shirt number of his idol Hank Aaron , who started his career in the Negro Leagues and broke Babe Ruth's home run record in the 1970s , for which he was exposed to an extensive racist abuse campaign at the time.
  • Roy Turner - is the coach of the Lions, the strongest team in the league. At times he is extremely arrogant and never misses an opportunity to make fun of the bears and their trainer. For him, the Buttermaker team is just a collection of losers and “rockers in dwarf format”. Turner, who likes to be macho, has little to say at home. Over time, he has to acknowledge the work of Buttermaker and the relationship between the two gradually improves.
