Walter Hotz

Hans Ludwig Walter Hotz (born May 30, 1912 in Worms ; † March 14, 1996 there ) was a German art historian and Protestant pastor .

Life

Walter Hotz, son of the municipal building inspector Philipp Hotz , studied Protestant theology and art history from 1930 to 1934 at the Universities of Giessen , Jena and Bonn and at the Institut protestant de théologie in Montpellier . It was 1934, casting the theological faculty review and in 1935 in Giessen with a dissertation on the construction history of the castle Wildberg in Amorbach doctorate .

After completing voluntary military service in the Reichswehr , Hotz became an employee of the Evangelical Union in Berlin in 1935 . There Hotz worked in the press and publishing sector, at the same time he was a member of the editorial team of the Protestant youth magazine Jungewacht for the Christian Scouting Society in Germany . During his work for the Evangelical Union, Hotz published several art history guides, but the art history habilitation he had planned was replaced by military service during the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, most recently as a first lieutenant and others. a. as a propaganda officer in Italy, prevented.

After the end of the war, Hotz began a vicariate at the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau . First he worked in Fränkisch-Crumbach , in 1947 he was ordained a pastor in Reinheim in the Odenwald , where he held the pastor's post until his retirement in 1977. During his time in Reinheim, Hotz wrote most of his art history work. The focus of his work was the Alsatian Romanesque , the Worms Cathedral and its successor and castle research .

In retirement, Hotz moved back to Worms, where he was, among other things, chairman of the Worms Antiquities Association from 1983 to 1988 .

His extensive estate is in the Worms City Archives .
