history

St. Paulus (painting by Albert Emil Kirchner , around 1855), from 1881 to 1928 Museum des Altertumsverein Worms

The Worms Antiquities Association was founded on July 14, 1879 on the initiative of the members of the city council and the members of the Historical Association for the Grand Duchy of Hesse who live in Worms .

At the suggestion of Maximilian von Heyl , the antiquity association founded a history museum in the Pauluskirche in 1881 , which showed exhibits from antiquity to the Middle Ages . Overall, the founding phase of the association was strongly influenced by the Heyl zu Herrnsheim family . In 1883 Maximilian von Heyl handed over his private collection of Luther and Reformation writings as well as Luther letters to the association's own museum, thereby establishing the “Luther Library” of the city's scientific library. In 1906 the Antiquities Association handed over the Paulus Library, founded together with the Paulusmuseum, to the city of Worms, and in 1928 the Paulusmuseum also became the property of the city. In 1930 the museum moved to the Andreasstift.

During the National Socialist era , the association was integrated into the cultural program of the Third Reich. During the war, however, the club's work was gradually stopped. In 1947, a formal re-establishment was necessary under the French occupation authorities.

In 1979 the association was recognized as a monument preservation organization by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . In 2010 the association had 525 members.

In March 2015, the previously independent association “Wormser Lederindustrie” was accepted as a working group in the Worms Antiquities Association.
