action

Morris Buttermaker is a retired professional baseball player with a drinking problem. He makes his living cleaning swimming pools. As a baseball coach, he takes over a team of children from difficult backgrounds at the age of around eleven - with the ambition of turning a hopelessly untalented team into an excellent winning team in a little league . His main competitor is the arrogant trainer Roy Turner, who makes fun of the bears with his team. The bears initially lose all games without even having a chance.

Hope is in sight when Buttermaker can persuade his stepdaughter Amanda to join the crew. Amanda doesn't just come to play baseball, however. She wants to bring her stepfather back together with her mother. This fails, but the team is getting better. When the stray, motorcycle-riding Kelly joins the team, the losing team becomes a team with a winning mentality, which plays against Roy Turner's team until the final.

But the ambitious gymnast loses his nerve at this game. When another defeat threatens, he beats one of his best players, which angered spectators and Buttermaker against him. Buttermaker then changes his weakest players and Turner's team still wins. Winning isn't everything.
