Richard Stuart Linklater (born July 30, 1960 in Houston , Texas ) is an American film director and screenwriter .

Life

Linklater is a self-taught film director . After doing numerous odd jobs, he started a small film production company in Austin to make his first short film, which came out in 1985. He founded the Austin Film Society in 1985 with Lee Daniel , whom he met through the Heart of Texas Filmmakers, a group of Super 8 filmmakers .

In 1991 he made his feature film debut with the independent film Rumtreiber . The film was a style-defining model for directors of the 2000s and 2010s, who are assigned to the film genre Mumblecore - an indie film subgenre . Linklater's breakthrough came with the teen comedy Confusion - Summer of the Freaky 1993. From then on he was celebrated as a director's child in the USA. Already his next film Before Sunrise earned him the 1995 Silver Bear at the International Film Festival in Berlin one for best director.

Linklater has worked repeatedly with the actor Ethan Hawke , for example in Before Sunrise (1995), The Newton Boys (1998), Waking Life (2001), Tape (2001), Before Sunset (2004), Fast Food Nation (2006) , Before Midnight (2013) and Boyhood (2014). Lee Daniel was responsible for camera work in many of his early films . In addition, Linklater has been working exclusively with film editor Sandra Adair since 1993 .

From 2002 to 2013 Linklater made the film Boyhood , which shows the growing up of a boy portrayed by Ellar Coltrane over a period of 12 years. What is special about the film is that the actors really grow and age over the course of the very long film project, so that the coming-of-age story could be staged realistically - always with the same cast. In this respect, Boyhood is a fictional long-term film study. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival . In Germany it ran for the first time in the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2014 , where Richard Linklater received the Silver Bear for best director .

At the 2015 Golden Globe Awards , Boyhood won the Best Motion Picture Drama category , Linklater won the Best Director award, and he was nominated for Best Screenplay. In 2020 Linklater was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

His daughter Lorelei Linklater , born in 1994, works as an actress.
