Before Sunrise ( German  Before Sunrise , alternatively: Before Sunrise - stopover in Vienna ) is a feature film from 1995 . Directed by Richard Linklater , the writer wrote Richard Linklater and Kim Krizan . Ethan Hawke plays the American Jesse, who makes the acquaintance of the French woman Celine, played by Julie Delpy , on his journey from Budapest back to the USA . Both spend a very special night in Vienna.

The film continued with Before Sunset ( 2004 ) and Before Midnight ( 2013 ).

action

The American Jesse and the French Celine, who is traveling back to Paris after visiting their grandmother , get to know each other on a train ride from Budapest to Paris. Jesse, who has to get off at the stopover in Vienna in order to take his flight to America the next day, persuades Celine to interrupt her train journey in Vienna for a day so that they can spend more time together.

The plot is minimalist and almost only shows the two main characters walking through Vienna and talking about their lives, their views and their love. Jesse is a romantic who poses as a cynic and Celine is a romantic who, however, has some doubts. The film ends at the Westbahnhof in Vienna, where Jesse and Celine promise to meet at the same platform in exactly six months after spending the night together. It remains to be seen whether they will see each other again.

Reviews

“Except for a few bizarre fringe characters, the film is entirely limited to its likeable main characters. Sometimes quite romantic and strongly related to dialogue, he asks questions about the meaning and tasks of human life and shows self-centeredness as a hindrance to happiness. "

“This is also the catch of the film, where much of what is tentatively suggested at the beginning is mercilessly talked to death at the end. Nevertheless, Richard Linklater surrounds his story with a magic and a naturalness that has become rare in the cinema. So the two young people, with all their inhibitions and complications, have our deepest sympathy from the start. "

- Frankfurter Neue Presse

“Richard Linklater loves the simple things. Not much has to happen with him to keep a film going. And so Linklater's third film splashes along with the most common of all stories, "Boy meets girl". And we watch as two initially insecure people get to know and love each other. The romantic, but also everyday Danube metropolis of Vienna provides the perfect backdrop. In the coffee houses, bars and parks, the protagonists talk about God and the world. Director Éric Rohmer has already captured life in a similar way . "This simple way of telling stories hits where every constructed kitsch drama aims in vain, right in the heart," judged the critics. "

Awards

The film ran in the competition for the Golden Bear at the Berlinale 1995 , but could not prevail against the film Der Decoy - L'Appât by the French director Bertrand Tavernier . Director Richard Linklater won the Silver Bear for Best Director . The two main actors Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy were nominated in the category Best Film Kiss for the MTV Movie Award .

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating “particularly valuable”.

backgrounds

The film's director and screenwriter Richard Linklater came up with the idea for the film when he was sharing a similar experience with a woman named Amy: They talked all night as they wandered the streets of Philadelphia .

The film, which was shot in its original location in Vienna with a budget of 2.5 million US dollars , was released in US cinemas on January 27, 1995, where the film received 1.42 million US dollars and a total of Grossed $ 5.53 million. The film proved to be a great commercial success, especially in Europe. The gross profit outside the US was $ 17.2 million. In Germany, where the film started on March 30, 1995, 301,329 visitors saw it in cinemas.

Reviews of the film were almost consistently positive. On the popular website Rottentomatoes.com , which collects reviews in English, the film achieved a very rare 100% rating. Alongside Cameron Crowe's Singles - Lonely Together and Ben Stiller's Reality Bites - Full of Life, Before Sunrise advanced to a Generation X film.

In 2004 a sequel called Before Sunset (also known as Before Sunrise II ) followed, with the same director and the same leading actors. Jesse and Celine meet again years after their meeting in Paris .

In 2013 the second sequel Before Midnight by the trio Linklater, Hawke and Delpy followed.

Locations

Most of the filming took place on original locations, for example on the Johann Strauss in Vienna's Danube Canal.
