Environmental activist Linda Powell had some messed up relationships when she met transportation planner Steve Dunne at a rock concert. Steve hasn't been very lucky in love either; Nevertheless, both of them immediately spark. In an effort not to screw it up this time, Steve wants to give Linda "enough space"; however, she believes she will be left behind again. In the to and fro of feelings, both reluctantly approach each other. When Linda becomes pregnant, Steve wants to marry her; but when she loses the baby in an accident, she separates from him, believing that he only asked her out of a sense of duty. Steve, however, lets her go out of discouragement. Both have to learn to stand by their own feelings before they can finally find each other.

The petite student Janet Livermore is in love with her roommate, the weird grunge musician Cliff Poncier. But he likes busty sirens and is not otherwise a child of sadness; he has little to do with the more conventional Janet (who wants a man who says "God bless you" to her when she sneezes). In order to finally be noticed by Cliff, Janet decides to have a breast augmentation performed. The plastic surgeon Jeffrey Jamison, who is supposed to perform the operation, advises her against: from his point of view, it is perfect. Janet realizes that her real worth has nothing to do with Cliff's image of women - and parting with her illusion. At that moment she begins to get interesting to Cliff; suddenly he sees her with new eyes and makes an honest effort to look after her.

Energetic media woman Debbie Hunt knows what she wants: the perfect man. However, the personal search for him is too strenuous for her, and so she uses the services of a placement agency. Debbie has to realize, however, that Prince Charming is not available to order: nobody loves her shrill earrings (that is, her real self beyond the yuppie facade). Only when she lets go can happiness come to her: "Now look at these fantastic earrings".

The cynical Baily, bon vivant and "maitre d´" by trade, presents himself as a bohemian in the style of French films. Will it win a woman's heart with it?
