action

Military adviser Brian Gilcrest returns to Hawaii to receive a traditional blessing on a new pedestrian gate on behalf of billionaire Carson Welch. Carson Welch wants to develop a nearby piece of land into a space center. Gilcrest ended his direct military career disaffected after an inglorious deployment in Afghanistan and therefore only works as a military advisor. He is supposed to negotiate a deal with the Hawaiians, because Carson Welch can only support the construction of a privately financed satellite with the approval and blessing of the Hawaiians. In Hawaii, Captain Allison Ng is said to be at his side. Her fascination for space reminds him of his own childhood dream of space travel, but she talks too much for him.

Gilcrest and Ng travel to a remote island community to meet King Kanahele and negotiate his participation in the blessing ceremony. On the way there, Ng tries to chat with Gilcrest about his life and work, but cannot break his cynicism.

When they meet the king, Ng inspires the people of the place with her refreshing manner and experiences the spiritual view of the natives on land and sky. After lengthy negotiations, Gilcrest can negotiate the king's participation and in return offers him two mountains and free cell phone coverage.

The next day, Gilcrest and Ng are invited to dinner at Tracy Woodside's. She is the former girlfriend of Gilcrest and is now married to John "Woodie" with whom she has two children. At some point, Gilcrest and Tracy find themselves alone in the kitchen, where she confesses that she still loves him. When he left her for his military career thirteen years ago, it almost broke her heart.

The next evening, Gilcrest and Ng attend Carson Welch's Christmas party. There they meet General Dixon, who admonishes them not to screw up the deal with the Hawaiians. One of the general's men hands Gilcrest a USB stick containing top-secret information for the upcoming satellite launch. When Gilcrest wants to take a quick look at the data on the laptop, he is disturbed by Ng. They get into a conversation and Gilcrest has to admit that he feels more and more attracted to Ng. He tells her about his experiences in Kabul , when he almost died. Being here and alive now finally makes him happy again.

Gilcrest and Ng spend a happy night together and enjoy the next day as a couple. Happiness is tarnished when Ng discovers that Carson Welch's satellite will be armed with a nuclear missile, and she immediately attempts to withdraw from the operation. Her colonel tries to reassure her and tells her that it would be a private operation operated by Carson Welch and that Gilcrest should be aware of the details.

Ng confronts Gilcrest in disappointment and makes it clear to him that he is lying to her and the Hawaiians and has no conscience. The conversation ends in an argument, and Gilcrest is furious with himself.

Meanwhile, Woodie and Tracy face the recent tensions in their marriage that Woody believes may have to do with Gilcrest's arrival. Tracy agrees they break up. The next morning, Tracy shows up at Gilcrest's hotel and reveals that Grace is his daughter. This noticeably lifts Gilcrest's mood and he feels a little connected to Tracy again.

On the day of the blessing for the new pedestrian gate, Brian learns that the Chinese are trying to hack the satellite's code to prevent its imminent launch. He rushes to the command center and can fend off the hacker attack. When he sees how the satellite enters a geosynchronous orbit and disturbs world peace there more than it promotes, he realizes what he has done. Without further ado, he orders a massive sonic upload to be sent into space, whereupon the satellite explodes. Brian and Allison are satisfied, but convinced that Allison's continued relationship with him would ruin their promising career, he tells her they shouldn't see each other again.

Carson Welch does not want to let the destruction of his satellite deter him from conquering space. He threatens Gilcrest with consequences and is determined to build a new satellite. Gilcrest also has to answer to General Dixon, who tells him that his career is over.

Brian returns to Tracy's house, where she asks how he would feel about risking his career just to impress a woman. She herself received a love letter from Woody and when she reads it to Brian, he says that she would belong to her husband. For her part, Tracy encourages Brian to fight for Allison. She would have "lit up the sky" for him and he should bewitch her with his blue eyes. After Woodie returns home and sees Brian in his house, he makes up with him. Brian leaves the house while Tracy and Woody enjoy their newfound happiness.

General Dixon learns that Gilcrest actually told the truth about Carson Welch's private nuclear plans and now praises him for what he has done. He realizes that civilians shouldn't be allowed into space. Welch will shortly be taken into custody by the authorities. After this interview, Brian meets Allison, who is preparing to leave. He confesses his love to her and promises to stay in Hawaii and wait for her to return.

Later that night, Brian stands in front of Grace's hula class and watches her dance. She notices him, he nods to her and she suddenly feels that he is her father. With tears of joy in her eyes, she runs outside and hugs him, then returns to her class to continue her hula dance. Brian also knows that he has now arrived.

reception

The film received rather negative reviews. At Metacritic , the film received a rating of 40/100 with a total of 36 reviews, of which only 3 were positive and 12 were negative. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 19 percent of reviews are positive out of a total of 139 reviews, with an average rating of 4.3 / 10. In summary, Aloha is described as rambling and insubstantial, Crowe was seldom more empathetic and at the same time the least convincing.

Chris Cabin sees the film in Slant Magazine as disappointing and says that too little attention is paid to the people and their characters and the music is literally played in the foreground. “In the end, Crowe's handling of the characters and the political dimensions of the story reflects the naivety of the film's title.” The only thing worthy of praise, however, is the music.

Andrew Barker described Aloha in Variety as "unbalanced, bulky and sometimes incomprehensible" and "without a doubt Cameron Crowe's worst film."

With an estimated budget of $ 37 million, North America had revenues of just under $ 21 million by the end of July 2015.

In addition, the film received critical reviews for casting Emma Stone for "a quarter Asian, a quarter Hawaiian" role. In June 2015, Crowe was one of the first to apologize for an "ethnically incorrect" casting.
