West Hollywood (abbreviation: WeHo ) is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California with 34,399 inhabitants.

Geographical location

West Hollywood is located on the northwestern edge of the Los Angeles Basin , near the Santa Monica Mountains . The city is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, which has a population of more than 12 million . The geographic coordinates are 34.05 ° north, 118.22 ° west; the size of the urban area is just 4.9 km². The east-west extension is 4.7 kilometers, the north-south extension about 2 kilometers. West Hollywood is located about 13 kilometers northwest of downtown Los Angeles ; the coast of the Pacific in Santa Monica is about 15 kilometers to the southwest. West Hollywood is an independent city, but is enclosed on three sides by Los Angeles ; only to the west does West Hollywood border the city of Beverly Hills . Since West Hollywood originally emerged from areas that were not yet part of Los Angeles around 1900, the border with the surrounding cities is very irregular; this is also reflected in the city's official logo. The entire metropolitan area of West Hollywood is built up and connects seamlessly to the surrounding communities. As is often the case in North American metropolitan areas, there is no noticeable separation between the city and the neighboring towns.

history

West Hollywood was originally created during the last decade of the 19th century as part of the construction of a railroad line from Los Angeles to Santa Monica that followed what is now Santa Monica Boulevard. The railway depot was located between these two cities, in the then sparsely populated area known as the Cahuenga Valley. The owners of the Los Angeles and Pacific Railway, Moses H. Sherman (after whom the nearby Sherman Oaks is named) and Eli P. Clark, founded the village of Sherman in 1896 , where railway workers and their families soon settled. Until the 1920s, Sherman developed independently of the eastern locations of Hollywood and Los Angeles; when Sherman and Hollywood, which was then part of Los Angeles, grew closer and closer together in 1922, an incorporation was discussed. While the city of Los Angeles annexed some of the surrounding, relatively unspoiled areas, Sherman remained independent. However, there were requests to rename the city to improve its reputation and to establish a connection with affluent neighbors Beverly Hills and Hollywood. Names such as Beverly Park, East Beverly, and West Hollywood have been suggested; Ultimately, West Hollywood was chosen in 1925. The city was still not independent, but was still under the control of Los Angeles County .

The railway line was now part of the Pacific Electric Railway and was used for passenger transport until 1941, after which it remained largely unused except for a few freight trains. Finally, in 1999, the track on Santa Monica Boulevard that was responsible for the establishment of the place was removed. Until the 1980s, there were repeated attempts to incorporate Los Angeles, but West Hollywood resisted them. In November 1984, the population voted to plant the church and the area became the City of West Hollywood .

Since the area was directly subordinate to Los Angeles County for a long time, there was a much freer legal situation than in the surrounding city of Los Angeles. So that was gambling legal here, which in the twenties to the establishment of numerous night clubs and casinos along the Sunset Strip led. Film people were also drawn to the vacant county area , and some architecturally interesting houses and apartment hotels were built . With the movie stars, so did the fans. Restaurants on the Sunset Strip such as Ciro's , Mocambo , Trocadero , the apartments in the Garden of Allah - which was demolished in 1959 - and the Chateau Marmont Hotel , built in the twenties of the last century (the complex of buildings is located just outside the city limits in the Hollywood area, Los Angeles) were frequented by movie stars and were the subject of the tabloids . In the 1960s, the film scene lost interest in the area, but the bars and clubs remained attractive to tourists and locals. In the hippie era, clubs like Whiskey a Go Go and Troubadour were famous across the United States.

In the early 1970s, a large influx of homosexuals and Russian Jews from the surrounding area of Los Angeles began. The large gay population and the large number of gay bars and shops made West Hollywood a prominent gay village . West Hollywood was the first city in the United States to have a majority of the city council gay or lesbian; In 1985, it also became the first city to officially register homosexual partnerships, and to legally recognize these partnerships for municipal employees.

population

According to the 2010 census, the city is home to 28,979 (84.2%) whites, 1,115 (3.2%) African Americans , 103 (0.3%) Native Americans , 1,874 (5.4%) Asian Americans , 34 (0, 1%) Pacific islanders , 1,049 (3.0%) members of other ethnic groups and 1,245 (3.6%) members of two or more ethnic groups. 10.5% of the population are Hispanics or Latinos .
