action
Lloyd Dobler attended high school and trained in kickboxing. He wants to go out with his classmate Diane Court before she goes to study in England, where she received a scholarship. He does not take into account that her family holds a higher social position than his.
Diane's father, James Court, tries to prevent his daughter's possible relationship. Meanwhile, he has problems with the investigative authorities. He is accused of stealing from the patients of the old people's home he runs. Diane campaigns for him with the officials.
Lloyd and Diane start dating, but she breaks up with him. He plays under the window of her bedroom by a tape recorder In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel starting to recover it. Meanwhile, Diane finds money stolen from her father in a hiding place. James explains that the money is for her studies, to which she replies that she does not want to be an accomplice to his machinations.
James' attorney negotiates a deal with the authorities that his client will be sentenced to nine months in prison. Dobler and Diane visit the imprisoned James, after which they fly to England together. The film ends with Dobler cheering up Diane, who was nervous at the start.
Reviews
Hal Hinson hailed the comedy in the Washington Post (April 14, 1989) as a "delicious surprise." The relationship between Lloyd and Diane is presented without clichés. The actors are "charming".
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times (February 17, 2002) that the film was a film about "sincerity". The love of teenagers is shown "tactfully". Ebert praised the actors' “human qualities”.
Awards
John Cusack received the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most Promising Actor in 1990. The film was nominated for the DVD Premiere Award in 2003 .
