John Mahoney
Charles Jonathan "John" Mahoney (born June 20, 1940 in Blackpool , United Kingdom - † February 4, 2018 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an English- American actor .
Life
Born and raised in England , John Mahoney joined the United States Army in the late 1950s and immigrated to the United States. After academic and journalistic activities, he turned to acting at the age of 37, initially as a theater actor . In 1977 he became a member of the Steppenwolf Theater Company .
In the early 1980s, Mahoney played his first roles in film and television . Subsequently he starred in films by Barry Levinson ( Tin Men , 1987), Norman Jewison ( Moonstruck , 1987), Roman Polański ( Frantic , 1988), Constantin Costa-Gavras , ( Betrayed , 1988) Ethan and Joel Coen ( Barton Fink , 1991, Hudsucker - The big jump , 1994) and Wolfgang Petersen ( In the Line of Fire - The second chance , 1993). In the cartoon Atlantis - The Secret of the Lost City (2001) he can be heard in the original English version as a dubbing voice.
Mahoney's best-known role is that of Martin Crane in the television series Frasier , in which he played the title character's father from 1993 to 2004, a retired police officer with walking difficulties who shares a life and apartment with his son with whom he has little in common. For this role, Mahoney has received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He also played in the episode "Between Heaven and Hell" (Season 2, Episode 22) of the sitcom Becker a father and the brother of a patient of Dr. John Becker (played by Ted Danson ). In the second season of the series In Treatment (2009) Mahoney played the recurring role of the managing director of an industrial group in episodes 2.04 to 2.34. In 2010 he starred in Rob Reiner's film In Love and Freaky .
Parallel to film and television work, Mahoney continued to play in the theater and won, among other things, a Tony Award in 1986 for his performance in The House of Blue Leaves . After the end of Frasier , Mahoney was mainly active in the theater again.
Mahoney died at the age of 77 while in hospital in Chicago. He was never married and had no children.
