action

Mickey Fitzpatrick works as a taxi driver in New York City , while his brother Francis is a Wall Street stockbroker . Despite being married to Renee, Francis has an affair with his brother's ex-girlfriend, Heather Davis. Heather, on the other hand, has a much older, wealthy lover.

One day, the college student Hope gets in Mickey's taxi and asks him to drive her to New Orleans for her best friend's wedding . Mickey and Hope are also getting married at the party, although they have only known each other for 24 hours. After the spontaneous wedding, the two Mickey's brother Francis and his wife visit Renee, who finds the quick marriage romantic almost 24 hours after the first meeting . Francis, on the other hand, feels his brother's decision is dubious. He is also angry that he was not present as a best man at what he believed to be the rushed wedding . Renee, who was having an argument with Francis about her unfulfilled love life shortly before the visit, sarcastically asks Mickey whether he has any other brothers. She still has no inkling that Francis spurns her because he is having an affair with Heather and is already planning her divorce .

One day, Heather happened to be a customer in Mickey's taxi. He accompanies her to her apartment to take his television set with him. He gives her back the watch she once gave him. Heather, who, like Mickey's brother, works as a stockbroker on Wall Street, mocks Mickey's career path. Hope, on the other hand, is jealous when she learns that Mickey has visited his former fiancée Heather, but quickly recovers.

Hope wants to study in Paris and get a doctorate. Mickey is to accompany her during her studies. Since Mickey is not immediately enthusiastic about her future plans and expresses concerns, she changes her wish and informs him that she will leave the country alone. In order to overcome their relationship crises, Mickey and Francis often visit their father, from whom they receive advice on love matters.

Francis proposes marriage to Heather. Heather asks for time to consider the decision. Before she can give Francis her answer, Mickey warns his brother that Heather financed her studies through prostitution . Although Francis turns away from her temporarily, he tries to return to her. But Heather has meanwhile married her older lover, who was her most loyal customer during her studies. Francis then calls Renee, who has since left him, to tell her that he made a mistake that he now regrets. However, Renee has since returned to her former high school boyfriend and rejects Francis.

Mickey announces that he wants to follow his wife to Paris. She first doubts the future of her marriage. Shortly before departure, however, she accompanies Mickey, Francis and their father while fishing. Although Mickey's father generally does not tolerate women on his boat, he manages to save the marriage of one of his sons through his change of heart after his own wife had abandoned him days before, who had cheated on him for months on the pretext of going to church .

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the story told in the film was actually interesting, but Edward Burns made it "artificial". He scoffed that New York only needed a Woody Allen . Berardinelli praised the portrayals of John Mahoney and Cameron Diaz, with some reservations also the portrayal of Jennifer Aniston.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of August 23, 1996 that Cameron Diaz was proving in the comedy that she was a “real actress” and also “one of the most beautiful women in the film world” (“one of the most beautiful women in the movies ”). The dialogue parts of John Mahoney, who played the father of the brothers, as well as the way in which the lyrics were presented, mocked Ebert. Overall, he found the film "disappointing".

"A little romantic comedy that can entertain you with some comical dialogues, but which hardly gives any information about the generation of almost thirty year olds."

"Freshly acting actors, lifelike dialogues and authentic-looking situations ensure pleasant entertainment."

Awards

Edward Burns was nominated for a special award at the Deauville Film Festival in 1996. Tom Petty in 1997 for the song Walls for the Golden Satellite Award nomination.

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
