James Allan Schamus (born September 7, 1959 in California ) is an American film producer , screenwriter and director.

Life

James Schamus gained his first experience in the film industry in collaboration with the still unknown film producer Christine Vachon , with whom he worked in 1988 on the creation of the Independent Television Service (ITVS) . At the same time he worked as a so-called script doctor at New Line Cinema , where Schamus became friends with Ted Hope. Both founded the New York film company Good Machine in January 1991 . Miramax's sales manager , David Linde , became a third partner in 1994 and expanded the company to include filmmakers and donors.

The company's first feature film was Pushing Hands (1992), which Schamus developed with Ang Lee , an immigrant from Taiwan . The subsequent joint work, The Wedding Banquet , was awarded the Golden Bear and an Oscar nomination in 1993 . Many of Lee's directorial works were co-produced by Schamus. Most of the scripts were also provided by him. Together, Schamus and Lee created the films Eat Drink Man Woman (1993), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Tiger and Dragon (2000, which won the Nebula Award for "Best Screenplay" in 2001) , Hulk (2003) and Danger and Desire (2007). Schamus received an award for his screenplay for The Ice Storm at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival and won several producer awards for Brokeback Mountain (2005).

Reputation as the most important producer of the indie movement arose Schamus additionally by Poison (1991), In the Soup (1992), What Happened was ... (1994) and The Brothers McMullen (1995), all at the Sundance Film Festival with were awarded the prize as “Best Film”. Good Machine has also made award-winning films such as Safe (1995), Walking and Talking (1996), The Family Secret (1997) and In the Bedroom (2001).

In June 2002, Good Machine was bought by Universal and merged with USA Films to form Focus Features .

Schamus has also taught film history at Berkeley , Chicago and Columbia University . He is married and has a daughter.

Schamus was the President of the International Jury at the 2014 Berlinale . In 2016 he made his directorial debut Indignation in the Panorama Special section of the Berlinale .
