Outrage (Original title: Indignation ) is an American drama film directed by James Schamus , which premiered on January 24, 2016 as part of the Sundance Film Festival . The film is based on the novel of the same name by the American writer Philip Roth from 2008 and celebrated its German premiere at the Berlinale 2016 in the Panorama Special section . The film was released in selected US cinemas on July 29, 2016.

action

In 1951, Marcus Messner, the son of a humble butcher , lives in Newark . Marcus leaves his hometown because he has good grades and in this way can escape the paranoid care of his father to study at a small, conservative university, Winesburg College in Ohio . Marcus is one of the few Jewish students there and is assigned a room with two other Jews.

One of his new roommates is Bertram Flusser, who is obsessed with classical music, Shakespeare, and theater. Although both roommates like him, Marcus maintains a distant relationship with them as he has never learned to accept love, be it from his parents or his friends. However, Marcus falls in love with Olivia, who he met at college and who ensures that Marcus has his first orgasm, and Olivia shares his free mindset. The idealist quickly messes with the administration, especially the dean. He sees himself exposed to anti-Semitic hostility and has to endure sexual reprisals.

His fear, triggered by the hysteria of the McCarthy era , of having to leave college in the event of a reprimand and being drafted into the Korean War , makes Marcus feel insecure and even betrays his first great love.

Literary template and staff

The film was shot at the New York College of New Rochelle, as shown here at the Gill Memorial Library

It is in the novel indignation of Philip Roth , who served the film as a template to a very personal work of the author, who is fictionalized his own experiences from the 1950s at college. The novel was published under the collective title Nemeses , and the thematically related novels deal with the question of how the individual asserts himself against the living conditions and what sometimes fatal effects his decisions have.

Directed by James Schamus , who also wrote the script. It is Schamus' directorial debut. Even if the film is essentially based on the novel, Schamus has taken the liberty of writing down individual characters and foregoing certain scenes, for example the big snowball fight and panty storm towards the end. Schamus said there was no other way to turn a book into a film.

Cast, filming and score

Logan Lerman took on the lead role from Marcus Messner
Sarah Gadon cast Olivia Hutton

The role of Marcus Messner, the protagonist of the film, was cast with Logan Lerman . Ben Rosenfield took on the role of Marcus' roommate Bertram Flusser, who is obsessed with classical music, Shakespeare, and theater. The role of Olivia Hutton, who Marcus falls in love with in the film, was cast with Sarah Gadon .

Filming took place in the summer of 2015 at the New York College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle and a restaurant in Whitestone.

The score is by Jay Wadley, who studied classical composition at the Yale School of Music . It was the first feature film for which Wadley composed the film music and, after a long time, the first music he composed for a real orchestra. Ethan Anderton of slashfilm.com speaks of a great score track with lots of strings and surges that goes well with the film's classic aesthetic and storytelling. The soundtrack for the film comprises 28 songs and was released by Nettwerk on July 29, 2016. In December 2016, the soundtrack was included in the list of candidates (longlist) at the Academy Awards 2017 in the category Best Film Music , from which the members of the Academy will determine the official nominations.

The film celebrated its premiere on January 24, 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival and was shown for the first time in Germany as part of the Berlinale 2016 in the Panorama Special section. The film was officially released in German cinemas on February 16, 2017.

reception

Age rating

The film is rated 12th grade in Germany . The statement of reasons for the release states: “Individual depictions of sexuality as well as psychological and physical violence can have an overwhelming effect on children under the age of 12, but those as early as 12 are able to distance themselves sufficiently. Since the staging is subtle, and the historical setting and many quiet passages provide relief, there is no risk of it being impaired. "

Reviews

The film was able to convince 82 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes (from a total of 111 critics, as of November 25, 2016).

Gerhard Midding from epd Film explained that the film was set in that neat age that predated the invention of youth culture : "Erotic signals are still chaste, sex takes place below the picture frame." According to Midding, the McCarthy era will be with us not addressed a word, but their climate is omnipresent. The centerpiece of the film, however, is Marcus' argument with the strictly moral dean.

James Schamus at the 2016 Montclair Film Festival

Richard Kämmerlings from Welt Online said that the film adaptation hits the here and now, and the reason for outrage is not only to be seen in the portrayal of the era in the 1950s , in which thinking in friend-foe categories and exclusion was supposed to be " Un-American "first civic duty, but also in dealing with depression and other mental illnesses that occasionally surface in the film:" The unstable and suicidal Olivia Hutton [...] is the only person who understands Messner, but as a lover and potential Wife, in her lack of stability, she is at the same time a threat to his ambitions and peace of mind. "

Thomas Abeltshauser from the Berliner Morgenpost commented on the film: “An interesting topic, but the problem with the film is that the screenwriter Schamus always has the upper hand over the late directorial debutant Schamus. The story is staged in a very old-fashioned and dialog-heavy manner, a lot is said and shown several times. "Peter Debruge from Variety saw it differently:" Even if the film Schamus' directorial debut, he is not an amateur, and his experiences and his energy he shines through to have transferred his 19-year-old protagonist. "

Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter , on the other hand, recognized Schamus as a potential Oscar candidate in the Best Director category , Logan Lerman as a possible Best Actor and Tracy Letts and Sarah Gadon as two Best Supporting Actresses .

Gross profit

The film's worldwide revenues are currently $ 3.9 million (as of February 2, 2017).
