The 32nd Sundance Film Festival was held in Park City , Utah , January 21 through January 31, 2016 . A total of 17 feature films and 19 documentaries premiered as part of the festival, including the films Weiner by Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg , The Birth of a Nation by Nate Parker , Morris from America by Chad Hartigan and Between Sea and Land by Carlos del Castillo . The film Manchester by the Sea , which also premiered at the film festival, received many praise, but received no award. Several films that premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival were shown a month later at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival , including the documentaries Uncle Howard by Aaron Brookner and Kiki by Sara Jordenö , but also the film Goat by Andrew Neel and that Director's debut Indignation of producer James Schamus . The film Captain Fantastic , which also premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2016 , and Matt Ross won the Un Certain Regard Director's Award there.

The award ceremony took place on January 30, 2016 at the Recreation Field House in Park City.

Additional prizes were awarded at separate events. Short films received an award on January 27, 2016.
