Nate Parker (born November 18, 1979 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is an American film actor , director , producer , screenwriter and political activist.

Life and education

Prior to his career as an actor began Parker at the Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach with the rings on. In the Virginia High School League he took third place. From 1997 to 1998 Parker was a member of the Great Bridge Wrestling Team and national champion in the weight class up to 61 kg. Parker then received a scholarship from Pennsylvania State University . In 1999, Parker and his roommate were accused of raping a fellow student.

In 2003 he graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in programming and worked in this field until a modeling agency noticed him at a model fair in Dallas.

Parker has been married to Sarah DiSanto since 2007, whom he met while at Pennsylvania State University. The two have four daughters together. Parker lives in Los Angeles .

Film career

By Denzel Washington Parker in 2007 was given the role of Henry Lowe in the film The Great Debaters . The film is based on a true story in which in 1935 students at Wiley College beat the reigning champions of the national debating competition. To prepare for this role, he wrote an essay on Lowe and read the works of James Joyce , DH Lawrence , WB Yeats , Countee Cullen, and Langston Hughes . In the 2008 film The Beekeeper , Parker played the protagonist's love interest. In the 2010 film Blood Done Sign My Name , Parker took on the role of African-American civil rights activist Benjamin Chavis . In 2014 Parker took on the male lead in the film Beyond the Lights from director Gina Prince-Bythewood .

In 2014, Parker announced that he was working on a film about the slave Nat Turner , who became a hero to many African-Americans, and that he would name the film The Birth of a Nation , an ironic allusion to the racist film the Birth of a nation is to be built in the 1915th The film, which is Parker's directorial debut, premiered on January 25, 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival and was awarded the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Prize at the awards ceremony . Fox Searchlight also secured worldwide rights to the film for a bid of $ 17.5 million, making it the largest ever contract in the history of the Sundance Film Festival. In March 2016 it was announced that Parker would be recognized as Breakthrough Director of the Year by the National Association of Theater Owners at CinemaCon in April 2016 for his work on the film . In January 2017, Parker received a Directors Guild of America Award nomination for his work .

At the beginning of March 2016 it was announced that Parker would be working on the script for a cinematic adaptation of the memoirs by ESPN producer Lisa Fenn, entitled Carry On . The film is about disabled judoka and wrestlers like Dartanyon Crockett and Leroy Sutton and their participation in the Paralympics. Parker gained experience in wrestling even before his film career.

After the nominations were announced at the Academy Awards in January 2016 , the #OscarsSoWhite discussion began. It was subsequently announced that new rules would be introduced to double the number of women and ethnic minorities within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by 2020. On June 29, 2016, the Academy invited 683 new members, including Nate Parker as a new Academician.

The Nate Parker Foundation

After Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson , Parker considered how he could use his notoriety to raise awareness of what was going on there. Parker decided to create an organization to deal with social injustices and founded the Nate Parker Foundation. The staff who run the Foundation have been tasked with improving the quality of life for black people through education, cultural enrichment, social justice, and economic participation. The foundation under public law collects donations that are used for the monetary and technical support of various local organizations that dedicate their work to improving the life of the black community and advocating a change in established power structures. As announced in early April 2016, Parker will be awarded the Theodore Parker Prize on April 22, 2016 as part of the Tribeca Film Festival 2016's Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards , which recognize pioneers in the field of social justice and politics .

Nate Parker School of Film, Drama and Theater

In March 2016, Parker announced that he wanted to build a film and acting school under his name at Wiley College, which is privately operated by the Methodist Episcopal Church , in Marshall , Texas , at which students should receive an education from autumn 2016 onwards that they all for one Film project necessary work prepared. The filming of the film The Great Debaters has already taken place at this university, which can look back on a long history and primarily teaches African-Americans . In addition, a college a cappella choir had contributed songs to the soundtrack of Parker's film The Birth of a Nation . Parker said of his motivation to start a film and acting school: The hope is that we cover all aspects of filmmaking, from sound to light to camera. His idea is also to teach students to tell the history of America through the eyes of people of color. Parker is working with Wiley College and its Foundation to develop comprehensive curricula that are tailored to the next generation of actors, filmmakers and screenwriters. Simultaneously with the school announcement, it became known that Parker had established the Nate Parker Summer Film Institute at Wiley College . The first students visited it in July 2016.
