history

The city of Ferguson was founded in 1855 when William B. Ferguson transferred part of his farmland to the North Missouri Railroad Company . This set up a depot, which was regularly approached - it was called Ferguson Station . William B. Ferguson subsequently sold his land to entrepreneurs and homeowners, turning the railway station into a small settlement.

Ferguson was promoted to City in 1894, at which point the population had grown to 1200, from 185 in 1880. Ferguson had transformed from a rural parish into a "railroad suburb" of St. Louis by the late 19th century. A series of incorporations between 1904 and the 1980s also contributed to the dynamic growth of the city.

After the Second World War, the electronics company Emerson Electric Company moved its headquarters from neighboring St. Louis to Ferguson. As one of the first cities in St. Louis County , Ferguson was headed by a full-time city manager from 1954 .
