action

A group of African American fighter pilots from the 332nd Fighter Group were sent into combat in Italy in 1944 after suffering numerous racial discrimination during recruitment and training. As so-called Tuskegee Airmen , they have to fly attacks on road transport and rail trains with outdated and worn Curtiss P-40 Warhawk - instead of flying against the Air Force over Germany according to their qualifications . The unit later received the Presidential Unit Citation .

background

Tuskegee Airmen fighter aircraft with characteristic paintwork.

During the Second World War , the so-called Tuskegee Airmen were trained as fighter pilots at the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee , Alabama . These men were the first black fighter pilots in the USAAC - racial segregation in the US armed forces was still in effect until Executive Order No. 9981 of US President Harry S. Truman on July 26, 1948. Despite or because of numerous harassment on the part of superiors, the trainers and the population they became one of the best units of the war and in 179 missions only lost 25 of the bombers they were protecting to enemy fighters. They managed to destroy well over 100 German aircraft, including three Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighters , all of which were shot down in a dogfight over Berlin. Tuskegee Airmen attacked a German torpedo boat (TA-22, formerly Italian destroyer "Giuseppe Missori") in the Mediterranean in 1944 and damaged it badly. In the same year, Lieutenant Charles M. Lester managed to shoot down three German Messerschmitt Bf 109s in one operation . During the war, the Tuskegee Airmen complained about 66 casualties. 32 pilots were taken prisoner by Germany.

Reviews

“And then no studio wanted the story. For twenty years. This is what Spike Lee always means when he says that blacks' contribution to America's wars is hidden in the greater cultural consciousness, and continues to this day. Before handing his inheritance over to Disney to retire, George Lucas finally made the decision to do the thing himself. Not with a huge budget, but at least $ 58 million. [...] It remains [...] the feeling that the filmmakers did exactly what they actually wanted to do - without anyone being able to talk them into it. "

"First and foremost," Red Tails "offers excellent diversion for fans of digital war games with a retro look - the sometimes breathtaking display values, however, cannot completely mask how ideologically questionable the film is at the latest at second glance."

- Andreas Günther : film starts

“The film, which refers to real events, turns out to be a kind of war memorial, whereby the less profound, but at least solid figure drawing of a group of different characters and the moderate depiction of violence are reminiscent of war films from classic Hollywood. Technically, the digital images, dominated by red and muted earth tones, and the flight combat sequences are state-of-the-art. "
