Terence Oliver Blanchard (born March 13, 1962 in New Orleans ) is an American jazz trumpeter and composer.

Live and act

Blanchard comes from a musical family (his father was a member of the Harlem Harmony Kings ). He received extensive classical training: he began taking piano lessons at the age of four, followed by trumpet lessons and, at the age of 15, composition lessons at the "New Orleans Center of Creative Arts", where he was also taught by Ellis Marsalis between 1978 and 1980 . From 1980 to 1982 he played in Lionel Hampton's band . Since his work with Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers from 1982 to 1986 (as successor to Wynton Marsalis and their musical director) he is considered one of the leading trumpeters. At the end of the 1980s he had his own quartet with the Blakey sideman and alto saxophonist Donald Harrison (albums Black Pearl , Crystal Stair ). They took u. a. 1986 Eric Dolphy / Booker Little Remembered, Vol. 1, 2 on with the same rhythm section as this one ( Mal Waldron , Richard Davis , Ed Blackwell ). In 1993 his album The Billie Holiday Songbook was released , and in 1999 Wandering Moon with Branford Marsalis , Dave Holland . For the latter album, he was voted artist and trumpeter of the year by down-beat readers. He recorded The Heart Speaks in 1996 with the Brazilian Ivan Lins (Grammy nomination for "Best Latin Jazz Performance").

Blanchard wrote the score for several films by Spike Lee , Mo 'Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), Malcolm X (1992), Summer of Sam (1999) and Inside Man (2006) and Chi-Raq (2015) ). In 2018 the music for BlacKkKlansman followed , in 2020 he was responsible for the music for Da 5 Bloods . Since 1987 he has played in Bill Lee's soundtrack for Spike Lee films such as Do the Right Thing (1998) or Mo 'Better Blues (1990) (which earned him a Grammy nomination) and in his documentary When the Levees broke (2006) about the catastrophe in his hometown New Orleans in Hurricane Katrina , in which he also appears. In 2019 he received a second Grammy for best instrumental composition for Blood and Soil . He received an Oscar nomination for his work in BlacKkKlansman .
