Princess and the Frog ( Engl. The Princess and the Frog ) is the 49th full-length animated film of the Walt Disney Studios and was released in 2009. The film is loosely based on ED Baker's children's book Esmeralda, Frog Princess , which in turn depends on the fairy tale The Frog Prince inspired is about Tiana, an African American girl who lives in New Orleans .

action

New Orleans, 1926: Tiana, a young woman from the lower class, has two jobs at the same time to save up money for her own restaurant. Meanwhile, Prince Naveen from the fictional kingdom of Maldonia arrives at the port with the intention of improving his financial situation. His parents stopped receiving money, and now Naveen wants to marry a wealthy southern American beauty. "Big Daddy" Eli La Bouff, father of Tiana's childhood friend Charlotte, is holding a masquerade ball in Naveen's honor. Charlotte hires Tiana to make fritters for the ball. Pay is enough to buy an abandoned sugar mill: Tiana's future restaurant.

Meanwhile, Naveen and his servant Lawrence meet Dr. Facilier, a voodoo witch doctor. Facilier promises the two that he can make their dreams come true. Unfortunately, neither of them gets what they expect: Naveen becomes a frog, while Lawrence takes the form of Naveen through a voodoo spell. Facilier intends that Lawrence marry Charlotte after which he will kill Big Daddy La Bouff and claim his fortune.

At the ball, Tiana learns that she will lose the mill to a higher bidder. Because Tiana's costume is accidentally destroyed, Charlotte gives Tiana a princess costume and a tiara. Charlotte returns to the party; Tiana expresses her wish in front of the evening star , only to find a frog sitting next to her. The frog is Naveen, who asks Tiana to kiss him and break Facilier's curse. Tiana agrees, but expects the money in return that she needs to outbid the other bidder. Unfortunately, it is not Naveen who transforms into a human, but Tiana into a frog.

The couple fled to the swamps of Bayou where they meet Louis, a trumpet-playing alligator , and Ray, a Cajun - fireflies that after a sparkling light named Evangeline longs. Louis and Ray offer to lead the frogs to the good voodoo priestess Mama Odie, who can lift the curse. Along the way, Tiana and Naveen develop feelings for each other. Meanwhile, Facilier makes a pact with the voodoo spirits: he offers them the souls of the people of New Orleans if they can find Naveen for him. Mama Odie reveals to the frogs that Naveen has to kiss a princess in order to become human again. Tiana and her friends return to New Orleans to find Charlotte. Naveen tells Ray that he loves Tiana. Before he can tell her, he is kidnapped by demons and brought to Facilier.

Ray tells Tiana that Naveen loves her. Tiana then goes to the Mardi Gras parade , where she finds out that Naveen appears to be marrying Charlotte. Tiana flees to a cemetery while Ray and Louis manage to free the real Naveen and steal the voodoo charm (an amulet ) from the false Naveen. Ray finds Tiana and gives her the amulet. He tries to stop the demons so they can escape, but Facilier fatally wounds him. Facilier meets Tiana and offers her to make her dream of her own restaurant come true if she gives him the amulet. Tiana refuses and destroys the amulet. The angry ghosts ask for Facilier in return and draw him into their world.

Naveen clarifies the situation to the confused Charlotte when Tiana joins them. Tiana admits that she loves Naveen and would spend her life with him as a frog. Charlotte offers to kiss Naveen so that he and Tiana become people. Unfortunately, Mardi Gras ends and the clock rings at midnight before kissing the frog. Louis appears with the dying Ray. Despite what happened, Ray shows his joy for the frogs before he dies. He is buried and becomes a star next to his Evangeline.

From now on living together as frogs, Tiana and Naveen are married by Mama Odie. When they kiss, they turn into people, as this marriage has made Tiana a princess. Both return to New Orleans, where the wedding is repeated. Tiana and Naveen buy the mill. Tiana's palace opens.

Production and publication

With the film, the Walt Disney Studios continued the tradition of hand-drawn, two-dimensional animated films that had actually been declared over after The Cows Are Going on. In addition to the directors John Musker and Ron Clements, Randy Newman (music) and Jeff Draheim (editing) were also involved. Production took place at Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures.

The film premiered in the United States on November 25, 2009; in Germany it was released on December 10, 2009.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews, earning an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 184 reviews. At Metacritic , a Metascore of 73, based on 29 reviews, could be achieved.

Kiss the Frog not only impresses with its wonderfully nostalgic drawing style, but also inspires with original figures such as the music-mad alligator Louis or the amorous firefly Ray. And while the musical interludes in previous Disney adventures were often just annoying interruptions to the plot, the Cajun, Zydeco and Dixieland songs written by Randy Newman are among the highlights of the film. Conclusion: The dark voodoo scenes are too scary for small children, but regardless of that, the film exudes a lot of Disney magic. "

“Disney couldn't have made a better comeback in classic cartoons. This film moves tears, and it makes tears laugh. Walt Disney would have been proud of him. "

Kiss the Frog is a joy because his drawing is brisk, the jazz, swing and gospel music by Randy Newman is attractive, and because Tiana is a thoroughly contemporary interpretation of the Disney princess. Not because she is now the studio's first black trick heroine, after all, she jumps around in green most of the time. But the fact that Tiana dreams of her own restaurant instead of princes and palaces gives the happy ending a different twist. "

“With Kiss the Frog , Disney is realizing a dream for all emancipated mothers who want to convey more to their daughters than that their future task will be to be kissed by the right prince at the right moment and thus saved. Despite the very moral message and the sometimes overstated clichés, the film will delight children and parents alike. Mainly thanks to its charming, typical Disney-style characters and the humorous, jazzy soundtrack. However, the very young viewers shouldn't be too afraid, because the vodoo magic by Dr. Facilier and his evil spirits have it all. "
