Jenifer Jeanette Lewis (born January 25, 1957 in Kinloch , Missouri ) is an American actress .

Life

Lewis began her acting career in 1979 on Broadway in a small role of Eubie Blake's stage work Eubie! . She then played in the musical Dreamgirls , directed by Michael Bennett, who later replaced her with Jennifer Holliday when the play was to be performed on Broadway. Lewis then worked as a backing vocalist for Bette Midler , making her film camera debut while starring on Bette Midler's HBO specials. As a result, she was able to gain first film experience in a small role in the film Friends ( Beaches ) at the end of 1988 . At the same time she developed her first autobiographical comedy The Diva Is Dismissed , which she initially presented in cabarets and later off-Broadway .

In 1988 the artist moved to Los Angeles , where her career stalled for a short time. It was not until 1992 that she was able to attract attention again in a small supporting role in the film Sister Act - A Heavenly Career , so that she gained further interesting film offers in the following years . In 1994 she played Mrs. Coleman in Mr. Bill at the side of Danny DeVito . In the series The Prince of Bel-Air , Lewis appeared again alongside Will Smith as Aunt Helen . Other roles in films and television series followed , including the lead role of Lana Hawkins in Strong Medicine: Two Doctors Like Fire and Ice , which she played from 2000 to 2006.

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
