Bette Midler
Bette M. Midler (born December 1, 1945 in Honolulu, Hawaii ) is an American singer , actress , comedian and author who has been one of the most successful entertainers in the USA since the mid-1960s. It has sold over 35 million records worldwide and has won almost all of the major American show business awards. These include three Grammy Awards , four Golden Globes , three Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards . Her most successful songs include The Rose (1980),From a Distance (1990) and their only number one hit in the US , The Wind Beneath My Wings .
life and career
Midler, who was interested in singing as a teenager, grew up in a Jewish family in Hawaii . Her parents, Fred and Ruth Midler, were inspired by Bette Davis for their daughter's name . In the 1960s, Bette Midler went to New York . In 1966 she played a seasick passenger in the movie Hawaii with Julie Andrews and got the role of "Tseitel" in the Broadway - Musical Fiddler on the Roof . In the following years she performed as a singer in bathhouses and night clubs. Barry Manilow became her companion , with whom she gave musical comedy programs that quickly became insider tips in the New York scene. Midler established herself as an interpreter mainly of songs from the 1940s. In 1972 she was able to release her first album The Divine Miss M , which was based on a stage show of the same name and for which she received her first gold record . In 1974 she was awarded the Grammy for Best New Artist.
The 1970s were characterized by successful albums and unusual stage programs that made them an enfant terrible of American show business . In 1979 Midler got her first leading role in The Rose after minor film work , which fictionally traces the unscrupulous marketing and early drug death of the rock and blues singer Janis Joplin . She received two Golden Globes and an Oscar nomination for her sensitive interpretation, and the title song she sang for the film became a top ten hit in the United States.
In 1980 the concert film Divine Madness was released . In the same year, Midler successfully published the book A View from a Broad . The look behind the scenes became a bestseller .
After the Flop Verhext (1982) and a break from cinema of several years, Midler had a number of big box office hits from the mid-1980s that proved her great comedic talent: Zoff in Beverly Hills , The Incredible Abduction of Mad Mrs. Stone (1986), Nothing but Trouble with Guy (1987), Two Times Two and Girlfriends (1988) grossed between $ 40 million and $ 70 million in the United States alone. Her greatest success followed in 1996 with The Devils Club , which grossed over $ 100 million at the box office.
She also continued to record albums and expanded her repertoire to include pop , rock , musical , jazz , chanson and disco . In 1989, the single Wind Beneath My Wings from the soundtrack to the film Girlfriends (with Barbara Hershey ) reached first place in the US charts and was named Single of the Year at the 1990 Grammy Awards . The following year, Midler received another Grammy for her version of From a Distance .
Her show The Showgirl Must Go On started on February 20, 2008 in the Colosseum of the Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas .
From March 2017 to January 2018, Midler was in a revival of the musical Hello, Dolly! first seen in a leading role on Broadway. She received several awards for her portrayal, including the Tony Award in June 2017 . Her successor in the production was Bernadette Peters . At about the same time, the tragic comedy Freak Show , with Midler in a supporting role, was released in US cinemas.
